Boost Business

Adding an electric vehicle (EV) charger can be a great addition to your business. Finding the right one will bring you new customers and enhance your customers’ experience when they’re at your hotel, restaurant, retail store or other commercial establishments.  In this post, we will touch on some of the trends, benefits, and support from your property management electricians.

Growing Demand

Sales of hybrids continue to grow steadily at around 35 percent a year, while those for fully-electric models have grown even faster. Some auto-industry observers are concerned that there won’t be enough public chargers to meet the demand. That’s a clear opportunity for any business owner looking to add service to their customers and revenue to their business income.

A Local Need

The website cars.com listed the top five markets in the country for high-earning, “green” car buyers. Number two on the list was Charlottesville, Virginia.

If you’re a Virginia business owner looking to attract new customers who are high-income, educated and loyal, installing an EV charger is a low-cost way to do so.

Increase business at your location. Making your establishment EV-friendly will give you more customers, who will appreciate the ability to charge their cars at your location while they’re conducting other business, visiting or vacationing.

“Green” your image. Installing EV chargers will make your business stand out as eco-friendly and up-to-date. You might also qualify for local and federal tax credits in some locations.

Attract the customers you want. Most owners of EVs are affluent, well-educated and ready to spend money on things that enhance their lives. According to a recent market analysis of car owners, a quarter of EV owners have household incomes of $175,000 or more.

Getting Started – EV Chargers

Basic setup. All you need to get started is a standard 120-volt outlet. Make sure you locate the charger in a safe, well-lit area that’s protected from the rain. Since drivers will be there for a minimum of one hour, which allows for about 20 miles of driving on most electric cars, make sure the area is driver-friendly.

Advanced setup. To really attract EV drivers, ask your electrician to install a NEMA 14-50R 240-volt outlet to your charging station. This type of outlet is compatible with most electric vehicles, and even EV drivers whose cars aren’t compatible carry a cord set that can be adapted to it.

Tesla chargers. While most Tesla owners use the NEMA 1450-R, there is a charger available that is made specifically for Tesla cars. This outlet uses a J1772 plug that will only work with Teslas.

Smart Features for Your EV Charging Station

If you want to install a full-service charging station, you’ll be able to include smart features that make it easier to use for you and for drivers.

Ease of use. Keep it simple. Make sure it has a “plug-and-play” feature that automatically adjusts the charging to the type of car being plugged in.

Ability to work with any driver app. Open to Driver types will work with all the most popular EV drivers’ apps such as PlugShare.

Data sharing. Automation and data will allow you to get information about how much you’re spending, and potential ROI.

Installing the EV Charging Station

You’ve decided to install an EV charger and get all the benefits that it brings. Some questions may remain…

  • How do I install it safely?
  • What is the best location for it?
  • Will I need to upgrade any wiring or add a subpanel?
